What is CyberKnife Radiosurgery?

CyberKnife Radiosurgery is a highly-advanced, non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery.

While this surgery contains the word “knife,” there are actually no scalpels associated with this procedure! Instead, it uses computer-controlled robotics to deliver high doses of radiation to both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors. It can treat tumors in various areas throughout the body. Best of all, CyberKnife is pain-free!

CyberKnife radiosurgery has been used to successfully treat many conditions, including:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Brain cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Spine cancer

Ideal candidates for the procedure are patients with cancerous or non-cancerous tumors. The treatment can also be beneficial for patients for whom traditional surgery is not the best fit.

During CyberKnife radiosurgery, patients will be able to relax and breathe comfortably as they listen to their favorite music. Unlike some radiosurgery procedures, which are only used to treat brain tumors, the CyberKnife can treat tumors throughout the body. In addition to the procedure being  non-invasive, patients often choose to undergo CyberKnife radiosurgery due to its extreme accuracy. The system delivers precise doses of radiation to the tumor, while keeping radiation away from healthy surrounding tissue.

Typical CyberKnife treatment sessions will last for anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes. However, this depends on the type and size of tumor being treated. Occasionally, several (2-5) treatments may be necessary to effectively treat the tumor, although no more than five consecutive daily treatments are required. Following treatment, patients may experience some mild temporary side-effects, such as fatigue, although most patients will be able to return to a normal routine almost immediately.

Dealing with a cancer diagnosis is never easy. However, CyberKnife radiosurgery has been found to be effective for many patients who are suffering from the disease. Your doctor will work closely with you, both before and after radiosurgery, to make certain you receive the best care possible.
