The Benefits of Radiosurgery

Benefits of Radiosurgery | Princeton Neurological Surgery | Dr. John Lipani

Each year, millions of patients are diagnosed with metastatic spinal tumors. These tumors cause considerable pain, debilitation of the spinal column, instability, and neurological deficits, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Over the last few years, radiosurgery has gained considerable notice among patients. Radiosurgery is a non-invasive procedure, which is considered an effective alternative to more invasive forms of spinal surgery. While traditional surgery involves using knives or scalpels, spinal radiosurgery instead uses x-rays to treat tumors. This treatment is ideal for patients who are not considered healthy enough for traditional surgery.

Radiosurgery is usually chosen as an alternative to traditional surgery for a variety of reasons. So, what are some of the most common reasons patients choose spinal radiosurgery over more traditional surgery.

  • Less invasive treatment. Patients who are suffering from tumors often do not want to undergo invasive surgery that will require a lengthy recovery period. Unlike traditional surgery, radiosurgery is not invasive, and relatively painless. In fact, the procedure requires no incisions at all! The procedure is performed using a focused dose of radiation, which will allow the patient to feel comfortable and relaxing while undergoing treatment. Best of all, no anesthesia is required during a radiosurgery procedure!
  • Little downtime. Radiosurgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, although some patients may be required to stay overnight in a hospital for observation. Fortunately, though, most patients will not face a long recovery period, and will be able to return home the same day as treatment! Most patients will immediately experience pain relief following radiosurgery.
  • Few side-effects. Side-effects with this procedure are generally rare, though some patients may experience headaches, nausea, or vomiting following treatment, all of which can be alleviated with medications.
  • Thorough procedure. Although it is not an invasive procedure, radiosurgery serves the same function as any other surgery. However, radiosurgery very specifically targets and kills tumors, reducing a person’s pain and chances for the tumor to regrow. However, areas of surrounding healthy tissue, bone, and the spinal cord are all left untouched.
