We are dedicated to educating those with brain and spine disease who may be candidates for radiosurgery. We understand that choosing the best treatment option can be a daunting task. Certainly, it is important to know which medical centers offer the most advanced technologies along with the most experienced clinicians. The emergence of several new medical devices and treatment strategies require continued medical education and specialized training to provide you with the best possible care.
Radiosurgery is a knifeless technology that uses high dose radiation delivered to precise locations for purposes of treating diseased tissue. In most cases, the target tissue is a tumor consisting of either a benign or metastatic lesion. In other cases, such as with trigeminal neuralgia, the target is a cranial nerve for treatment of severe facial pain. Over the past several decades, radiosurgery has been used successfully to treat intracranial lesions with Gamma Knife.
Gamma Knife traditionally requires the application of a fixed stereotactic head frame for targeting purposes. Recent advances in technology using CyberKnife and other LINAC-based devices allow us to safely target lesions both in and outside the skull without the need for rigid bony fixation. Radiosurgery has therefore become an increasingly important and more versatile treatment option that can, in appropriate cases, provide an alternative to open conventional surgery.
There are many important aspects involved during the planning of your radiosurgery case. The radiosurgery device must be programmed by specially-trained physicians in order to obtain the desired result of effectively treating the target while keeping you safe! At the JD Lipani Radiosurgery Institute, we specialize in conventional open or invasive brain and spine surgery as well as non-invasive brain and spine radiosurgery. Therefore, information within this site is presented without bias for purposes of helping you make an informed decision along with your doctor.
