Meningioma

What is a Meningioma?

Meningiomas are slow growing, extra-axial, usually benign tumors arising from the arachnoid layer of the brain.  Meningiomas may occur anywhere arachnoid cells are found (between brain and skull, within ventricles, and along the spinal cord).  These slow growing tumors gradually compress vital brain structures.  They may present with headaches, seizures, weakness usually on one side of the body, or hemorrhage.  In other cases, they may be completely asymptomatic.  Meningiomas may also invade the bone such as the spinal vertebra or the skull.  In rare cases, meningiomas may become malignant and/or rapidly growing.

Treatment and Surgery for Meningioma

Treatment for meningiomas may be necessary when they become symptomatic or when they are noted to be growing.  Surgical resection is often the treatment of choice for these tumors.  The goal of surgery is complete removal along with bony attachments to prevent recurrence.  Unfortunately, complete surgical removal is not always possible and recurrent growth is not always preventable.  For this reason, post surgical follow-up with serial MRI scans is recommended.

Another treatment option for meningiomas may include radiosurgery.  Radiosurgery is a noninvasive technique that uses high dose radiation targeted precisely to the tumor.  Radiosurgery may be used in patients who are not operative candidates or with tumors that do not require immediate surgical decompression.  The benefit of radiosurgery is that it does not require open brain surgery and therefore is not associated with the risks of an open procedure.  Your neurosurgeon will review all your options along with associated risks and benefits of each.  To learn more about surgical treatment for meningiomas, please click on the link below to visit our cranial procedure section.  To learn more about radiosurgery for treatment of meningiomas, please visit the JD Lipani Radiosurgery Institute.
