Skull Base Tumor

What is a Skull Base Tumor?

Tumors often develop in or spread to the skull base, the area behind the eyes and nasal cavities that encompasses the “floor” of the skull. These tumors can be malignant or benign and may lead to complications with the nerves, blood vessels and spinal cord, all of which pass through the skull base area.

Patients with a skull base tumor may experience symptoms such as facial pain and numbness, headache, nasal obstruction, shortness of breath, hearing loss and others, depending on the type and size of the tumor. Tumors of the skull base are classified by their location or type, and may include meningiomas, schwannomas, chordomas and metastatic tumors that have spread from other areas of the body.

Treatment and Surgery for Skull Base Tumors

Whether benign or malignant, nearly all skull base tumors require treatment to remove the tumor and prevent complications as the tumor grows or cancer spreads. Treatment for skull base tumors may involve surgery, radiation therapy, radiosurgery, chemotherapy or a combination of these approaches. Surgery may be performed using open or minimally invasive techniques, which can sometimes be performed with minimal incisions. Your doctor will determine the most appropriate treatment for your condition after a thorough evaluation.
