Low Grade Glioma

What are Low Grade Gliomas?

Low-grade gliomas are slow growing malignant primary brain tumors. There are several different types of low-grade gliomas that differ histologically and with respect to prognosis. These tumors generally occur in young adults or children, and are often diagnosed after a history of seizures. The natural history of these tumors vary. However generally, they may take years, if not decades, to grow.

Diagnosis of Low Grade Glioma

Low-grade gliomas may initially be imaged using MRI and PET scan. Although imaging studies may reveal certain characteristics that suggest one specific tumor type, definitive diagnosis can only be obtained via brain biopsy.

Treatment and Surgery for Low Grade Glioma

Complete surgical resection is often sufficient for some of these tumors when it can be accomplished. When this is not possible, such as with tumors that involve a critical region of the brain, then further therapy is required usually in the form of chemotherapy for younger children and radiation therapy or radiosurgery for older individuals.
