Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM)

What is Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM)?

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common primary brain tumor. It is also the most malignant astrocytoma. The incidence of GBM is 2-3 cases per 100,000. The tumor causes mass effect and invades adjacent brain tissue resulting in loss of function and neurologic decline. Without treatment, patient’s succumb to this disease within weeks.

Diagnosis for GBM

CT and MRI scanning can be used to diagnosed GBM. GBM tends to have typical characteristic findings on imaging studies that lead to high clinical suspicion of the diagnosis. Stereotactic brain biopsy may be performed for definitive diagnosis. In many cases however, open brain surgery is required urgently to avoid acute neurologic decline. Tissue biopsy is performed in these cases during surgical decompression.

Treatment and Surgery for GBM

Treatment for GBM involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.  Unfortunately, complete resection of the tumor does not result in cure.  Combination therapy is guided by the size of the tumor and its location.  Stereotactic radiosurgery has also been used successfully during times of recurrence.  New treatment options and strategies offer hope for improved outcomes.
